While I would very much like to see no illegal crossings of the southern border, I can’t help sympathizing with the Biden administration on this issue - 2000 miles are not easily patrolled or sealed even with unlimited resources which we clearly don’t have. Thanks to Covid, the US had a net outflow of immigrants for a brief period due to the collapse of the economy. Now the US economy is absolutely killing it, especially the labor market, not only in absolute terms but more so relative to our neighbors to the south. Leaving aside the legal right that human beings have to apply for asylum, what exactly is Biden supposed to do beyond what he’s been trying?

Illegal immigration surged under Biden. It was the same border under Trump, but the situation was much better.

No context? So, the 3 million+ jobs lost in Trump’s 4 year term - the worst record since Herbert Hoover - were just his doing? Interesting.

Nice whataboutism there. What's with the "progressives" and your whataboutism? Wait! Did I steal a word? LOL

Making the case for more context is hardly whatsboutism. I’m pretty sure your comment belongs on X, especially the LOL.

Sorry, it was standard liberal whataboutism. And like virtually all "progressives," you cannot ever be told anything at all, because you are better and smarter than mere human beings, and never get caught playing the same game that you pretend to oppose. LOL

You belong on X. Thanks for illustrating.

Haley fully deserved the criticism she got. The woman is obviously not any kind of deep thinker, that's for sure. She should have come right back and said, in essence, "I had a brain fart, and I don't blame anyone for being mad at me over it. In fact, I am mad at myself for my poor answer, and I apologize for it. I can hardly believe how dumb I was. I need to get more sleep the night before my campaign appearances."

If nothing else, it would have been a first for a politician to forthrightly admit an error and put the blame exactly where it belongs, on the person in the mirror.

Now I await the ‘"progressive" comments on Claudia Gay and her blatant, repeated academic fraud. We already had a review in the form of the Harvard Crimsons craven "whataboutism," (oh how I love that word! ) and I expect more to come.

As a former professional journalist in the days when it was an honorable thing, I can say without a shred of doubt that if I had done what she did, I'd have been fired from the Dubuque, Iowa Telegraph Herald in a nanosecond. Harvard needs to yank her tenure and fire her as a professor, and then investigate the whos, whats, whys, and hows of her hiring and promotion.

The woman is a grifter, and unfit to hold any academic position anywhere, all the way down to a local community college. Harvard's board needs to be replaced.

Especially a local community college! That’s where most students are and where the most damage can be done.

It would be interesting to see each candidate, on e at a time, sitting at A Round Table with well informed college students who are asking questions.

We differ markedly, in our opinion of what Biden could have done regarding Afghanistan. Trump had already set up the withdraw date of 1 May, 2021. My belief is that Biden, in a moment of pique and vanity, thought he could set his own date, and that the Taliban would honor it.

It helps to remember that up to about 1 May, 2023, the Taliban had for the most part not attacked American soldiers, anywhere in Afghanistan that year. The deal was set, we reneged and suffered the results, that a more competent leader would have foreseen, and avoided. Our men and allies could easily have been evacuated within those four plus months available to Biden, since his inauguration.

The deaths of American soldiers, the leaving of our Afghan allies, and our equipment, much of which is now in China's hands, thanks to the Taliban and their need for money.

It all could have been so different, with the same result, we were out of Afghanistan. The disaster is strictly Biden's, to further underlie my view.

Or option 4, she’s not a smart as people give her credit for being. The fact that she believed that Tik Tok viewing makes a person 26% more anti-Semitic (as if that is something which a measurement can be assigned) is datapoint #2 that she is a meathead.

We agree. She is no deep thinker. Typical of most VP candidates. Still smarter than Biden, but that's a low bar.

“I could argue that Afghanistan was going to end disastrously no matter what, but that’s another column”

Write that column, there has been far too much uncritical acceptance of the views of people who either supported or actively spent the hundreds of billions in Afghanistan that just another billion or another few months would have made the difference, if after all that time and all that money the people who prosecuted the nation building in Afghanistan couldn’t build a security services or Govt that could last longer than a week without US support why on earth are we listening to them when they tell us what should have been done to avoid the chaos of the withdrawal

“Leaders aren’t supposed to decide who’s right or wrong or good or bad. … What a leader does is know where people are, and communicate their way forward so that you can get to a better place.”

Absolutely wild that Haley goes with a formulation of the Ledru-Rollin quote but unironically

There go the people, I must follow them, for I am their leader’

Biden (who I voted for) is simply too old or too stupid to understand that the age of mass migration is over. Importing millions of people illegally who will work for next to nothing just to be here destroys the wages of working class Americans and drives up housing costs when we can't house our own citizens. People cannot overpopulate their home country and just expect to move to greener pastures. There are no more green pastures. Instead of leaving, migrants must seek to voluntarily reduce their country's population to an environmentally sustainable level and stay there.

Since Biden fails to understand this issue he will surely help reelect Trump who does.

Expand full comment

“Voluntarily reducing their reducing their country’s population” is exactly what the migrants are doing - by leaving their overpopulated nation and coming to the best choice available. Biden has several problems including the fact that the US has the most successful economy in the world right now and he is unwilling to be as cruel and brutal as the situation perhaps warrants. He also has a party in which mistreatment of migrants would generate passionate opposition. His handling of the issue has been disappointing on a number of levels but I appreciate the difficulty of his situation.

"unwilling to be as cruel and brutal.." these effing words they use - they catastrophize everything. you'd think we were shooting and dismembering illegals on sight at the border.

I cannot say, but I will say this much: Sometimes I wonder if I am the last American who really tries to use a single standard for everyone and everything.

I confess to being one with such with left wing organizations as the Catholic Church (which has actually been quietly heroic during the crisis) as well as my own Episcopalian. If viewing this issue through essentially Christian eyes makes me risible in your judgment, it isn’t going to bother me as much as Steve Cohen’s mismanagement of the Mets. While I very much want to to see immigration slow down, as of this morning unemployment is at a 50 year low and my department has 220 vacancies due to skilled technicians being so scarce. So we actually can afford to be humane despite your commitment to be otherwise.

More delusion. There's no argument you can make against Cohens' management of the Mets after the Wilpon era.
