now there's a new Territory to discover: The Big Middle, where Americans of all political stripes can convene and come to consensus on practical solutions to our common problems
One of your best columns since I became a subscriber. It will be interesting to see if the Trump movement’s excesses can be as easily and quickly undone as the social left’s have been. I suspect not.
Anything that starts with Huckleberry Finn and ends with a Black critic of both the Left AND the Right with Ford, Edison, Firestone and some Bird Man on a road trip in the middle of it all is pure literary gold. It’s GOLD, Man! Gold.
History is a pendulum. It swings left to excesses and then right to extremes. As painful as Trump 2.0 has been, it’s given this liberal an occasion to look more deeply into his own inner Huck. I’m willing to confess to too much political rectitude. That said, let’s not forget the ideals behind the likes of BLM and Me Too: equality, dignity, and opportunity for everyone. Isn’t this the same territory to which we continue to light out?
Can’t top the other encomiums. But I can say that you are a master at weaving together so many disparate themes and sources. And when do have all that time to read so much? Thx for recommendations. Agee on Phantom Orbit. I am methodically reading Ignatius. For me on a par with Dan Silva, whom I love too

This column is a gem and belongs in an anthology.
