Nice rant. But gauzy antebellum visions won’t attract a following or correct the situation. It is from there that we got here, after all. I’m afraid we’ll have to depart from our beloved moderation, offering a cogent view of how America got here and what institutionally needs to change to repair the damage. Meantime, I’ll have only good things to say about AOC and Bernie; at least they’re in the fight.
Typical MAGA response. Ignore the substance and insult the writer. I don’t understand why these people read anything outside their echo chamber. Good piece, Joe.
Goldberg is a garbage peddler and a lying piece of scum; the purveyor of the "Russia Russia Russia", the "fine people on both sides" and the “Suckers and Losers" hoaxes. His latest; “could be conceivably interpreted as” putting US forces in harm’s way is in fact an admission that it wasn’t. If there was something specifically embarrassing to the Trump administration this scumbag would have shouted it from the rafters, but alas just another nothing-burger. It is no coincidence that Goldberg waited nine days to release his story the night before the scheduled Senate Intelligence Committee meeting. Obviously he gave the democrats a preview so they could prepare for their ambush. It’s just another example of why the MAGA community gives the middle finger to the left wing media.
Goldberg is not a hero. He simply chose what to release, no doubt on advice of counsel, to avoid committing a crime. In the case of a person who receives classified national defense information without authorization the Espionage Act (18 U.S. Code § 793 and § 798) makes it a federal crime to either (a) willfully communicate or transmit the information to unauthorized persons, or (b) fail to timely report having the information to relevant authorities. The law applies to journalists, hackers, influencers, physical therapists, doctors, priests, comedians, clowns, Boy Scout troop leaders, etc. Depending on the severity and specifics, offenders can receive decades in prison. I suspect that the reason the White House was - by its standards - prepared for this incident is that it was in fact reported. That Goldberg chose to beat his chest over simply following the law feels a bit odd.
Still, he’a not the story. The others, particularly Hegseth who apparently put the information in the text stream, should be scrutinized. Hegseth broke numerous laws by doing this, and the others may have done so if they did not timely report it. Of course, any US Attorney who would charge them would be fired. Nor will a single member of the majority party in Congress (and it would only take 1 in the house) join Democrats in seeking Hegseth’s impeachment or a special prosecutor. But hey, it’s 2025, so let’s blame the establishment journalist.
Jeff Goldberg is a serial liar and has no credibility. A staffer accidentally or intentionally added Goldberg to the signal chat but Hegseth, Gabbard, and Ratcliffe all testified in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee that there was no classified information revealed on the chat so that none of them violated any law. The serial liar and piece of scum Goldberg further compromised his credibility by waiting nine days to release the story to help the democrats ambush members of President Trump’s cabinet. What is missing from the left-wing media’s coverage is the success of the attack on the Houthis. So as the democrats and their propaganda arm in the lamestream media continue to throw their hissy fits, like they did in the confirmation hearings, they merely expose themselves as the petulant children that they are.
Joe is a friend and I respect his writings. But this piece is a perfect example of why we have failed to meet the challenges of an early authoritarian regime. Joe just doesn’t get it. We are in a different world and all, this bulks**t about moderation and complexity is way beyind useful,or even moral. This is the entire f**king American legacy media
We have failed to meet the challenges of this regime because, as I think you agree, we have been slovenly and cowardly, and we've been FOR the wrong things. With no credibility, I don't see how we can mount an effective opposition. Indeed, we won't--unless we can convince the American people that Trump is an economic and moral disaster, and that we are right. That will take time. Bo, you roar like Lear on the moors but offer nothing. I am trying to offer--searching for--something other than ineffective roaring.
Am playing Devil's Advocate on Goldberg's reporting.
His being included was not a mistake, it was intentional. The standards of journalism he portrays, requiring verification, making sure nothing that would harm American men anywhere, is released, his position on the Atlantic, and his caution, make him the perfect listener, for a reporter on the line.
It has allowed America to see and hear, a portion of a conference, that I believe knew Goldberg would be getting the texts. It shows intelligence, division, coming together, and seemingly that Stephen Miller reigns over Vice-President Vance. In a different setting, it might not, if my view is correct.
.0000000000000000012456 citizens of the USA woke up this morning and had their breakfast ruined by the accidental release to Jeff Goldberg's of low level intelligence. Lets bring out the tired and worn quote from history. Making a mountain out of a molehill. A talent owned by the Democrats. The outrage machine swung in to action. Maybe shouting outrage in a crowded theatre too many times was the undoing of the Democrat party.
I agree. This is, as I wrote, a classic Washington story. More anthill than molehill. The important thing is the principle of journalistic responsibility, which Jeff observed. Which others, left and right, do not.

It is just to perfect to be a mistake.
Could I be wrong, sure, just wouldn't bet on it.

Social Security is not in chaos. Cmon man….
