I grew up reading all of you, Joe. Four fine, sane and informative journalists who behaved like gentlemen in print. The sense of melancholy and foreboding we all feel about this election is enhanced, as you say, by our own “autumnal” years, and those of our friends and family. Thank you for this moving tribute to Walter Shapiro.
What a great remembrance. Clearly a loss so deeply felt on a personal level and compounded, it seems, by what feels like a growing cultural and political void. RIP.
This is such a shock and what a loss. Walter was one of a kind. I had no idea he was sick, just emailing him a couple of weeks ago. Hearts go out to Meryl
A beautiful tribute; it made me regret that I didn’t know Mr. Shapiro. God rest his soul.
At such times, one can still be thankful that they were in one's life, and gave life to it in ways, no other could. Sorry for your loss.
Joe, this is beautiful. Perfect. The world is less now. And those who knew him know there will never be another like him.

May his memory be a blessing.
A warm and loving tribute, Joe. Too many losses recently, my friend. Too many.
