I am a registered Democrat and have been for over 50 years. I write to inform my fellow Democrats of what their party now wants to make into federal law: that any male claiming, at that moment, to have a female "gender identity" must be given full access to any female-only space, place, event, competition, whatever. This is the essence of the so-called "Equality Act", which is co-sponsored by every Democrat in Congress. I am opposed to this. So is our host Joe Klein. Which is why I write about it here.

I am not a diplomat in any way shape or form. I shout the truth from the rooftops. And the truth is that EVERY Democrat in Congress, EVERY Democrat governor, and more than 99% of Democrat state legislators firmly believe that a male who claims to have a female "gender identity" should be given full and unfettered access to any and all female-only spaces. He should be able to, at will, change the sex marker on his government-issued ID to female. Biden's State Dept allowed this on US passports. Most blue states allow it on state-issued ID. Polite, diplomatic language gets no attention and makes no progress. Transqueerism is a religion with a theology (key tenets: "trans women are women", a child can be "born in the wrong body" and knows this from the earliest age, it is society's moral obligation to alter such a child's body with drugs and surgeries to bring the body into alignment with the child's "true self", etc etc). This new religion has swept across the West with astonishing speed and power, and all left and center-left parties in all Western countries fully endorse it and do everything in their power to force society to accept it. And so here in the US, the Democratic Party has reduced itself to nothing more than the US political arm of the worldwide transqueer cult.
Sensible Democrats like Joe Klein know that this is insane, but they are powerless to do anything about it. Any Democratic office-holder who dissents from the theology in any way is either compelled to walk back their apostasy (eg Seth Moulton) or is primaried and removed from office (eg Shawn Nicole Thierry of the Texas House).
All of which is why I, a registered Democrat for over 50 years, now vote straight Republican.
Agree, he is a man of principle. He has balanced his views with his voters and both have done well with each other. Was sorry of his decision not to run, but that was his decision. The thought of him in the Senate may actually improve it, which it could well use.

I lived in Maine for 14 years and supported Jared Golden for Congress. So I don’t need the facts. I would hope he would heal from his forced retirement and not listen to MAGA propaganda, that is hurting him. I had problems with his votes and felt he voted that way because perhaps he was threatened. My heat goes out to him and his family. I know that Mr. Joe Klein thinks highly of him.
