Great piece, Joe, and your criticisms of Harris are valid. But she succeeded in her goal, which was taking Trump off message and making him appear unhinged and extreme. The debate will not matter to Trump supporters who will crawl over broken glass to vote for him, but it will change the minds of enough swing voters for her to win. By how much will she win? Enough!
Joe, clearly there are those among us on the left and right who will never see reason. Who are “suckers” for their prejudices and party.
But for the overwhelming majority of Independents and undecideds who see President Trump as the dishonest bully he is, calling those people “suckers” is enough to cause them to pull the lever for Trump just to spite the metropolitan elites who clearly have such little regard for their sense and sensibilities.
Of course MAGA diehards will forgive, ignore or worse cheer on his absurdities.
Just as the diehard Democrats and rabid anti-MAGA folk will do the same with VP Harris.
I suspect the 60% of Americans who are tired of the incompetence and partisanship of both main parties are also now tired of Trump’s bluff and buster.
The question is whether they are more tired of his character than they are on what they see as an assault on their standard of living, their culture and the traditional American way of life.
Trump has made a habit of defying the odds but you can only pull so many rabbits out of a hat before the audience catch on to the illusion.

The democrats and their partisan ABC media tried to tie President Trump to all of their lies, from a connection to Project 2025 which he doesn’t endorse and has stated that he hasn’t event read, to the Charlottesville “good people on both sides” hoax where Trump was talking about people disagreeing about the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue and excluding his specific statement condemning NAZIs, to another debunked statement from a fired DOD General that Trump disparaged the military, to his Jan. 6 speech encouraging those concerned about election fraud to “peacefully and patriotically” express their grievances, etc. etc. etc.
The bad news is that the lying, worthless, corporate/deep state Pravda media is the scum of the earth, you are the threat to democracy. The good news is you only play to those with a 4th grade education or less, which has been the objective of the self-serving teachers union to create. Those of us who can think for ourselves have kicked you to the curb and don’t believe your propaganda.
In the debate President Trump hammered home the point that we were better off under his presidency and that Comrade Kamala owns the dumpster fire failure of the failed Biden presidency.

Why doesn't Kamala announce that, if elected, she'll pardon Trump, as Ford pardoned Nixon. America really can turn the page. The "weaponized DOJ" nonsense is spiked. It'd be fascinating to see Trump's reaction. And make Kamala look like a statesperson of stature and principle.

You know, I've been thinking about this. In the end, though, she'd have to wait till after she wins to do this--and then, only with a signed statement by Trump that he will never run again. But still, a very interesting thought...thanks. Ted is now a clinical social work therapist, but still a stone baseball fan and I'll pass this along to him.
Am looking and was listening for some meat to put on the bare bones of her policies. Unfortunately, in my view, I heard nothing new. It seems like a lot of continuation of Biden's policy, but perhaps no further into progressive democrats arena.
It seems to be coming down to a choice of more of the same, which I do not see being a positive for the nation, or a crazy individual in the White House. Neither position appeals at all to me,
